Infusion Therapy still plagued with hazards, even when using so-called "smart pumps"

July 31, 2022

Infusion pumps create alarms and general confusion that lead to serious patient harm and nurse workflow interruptions.  There is an obvious need for a self-aware infusion device that can reduce conditions leading to alarms-  eliminating air bubbles instead of alarming or improved energy management so that infusions can always be completed without needing to find a power outlet.

For critically ill patients, today's infusion pumps can lead to a confusing mess of tubing and connections.  Smaller, lighter, simplified infusion devices that can handle all sorts of drug containers such as bags, bottles, syringes, and even vials can greatly reduce confusion and clutter at the bedside.
